I loved all different characters, and could feel a deep respect for Shakespeare's poetry and his truth in words. This helped me to find the setting for the Surinamese version, finding the Surinamese idea.. of what would be a challenge for two young people in love who cannot be together. The ingredients of the Surinamese version came to us, to me and the director .. the challenge that followed was how to draw the scenes.. the conflict, and to shape all characters in relation with each other. In the words of Julia and Romeo i kept the style of poetry of Shakespeare and some of his beautiful scenes between the two people in love. The theme changed into an illegitimate child, not recognized by his biological father.
The why, because of standards of old money versus drugs, about status and openness and hiding the truth. The underlying reasons were avoiding confrontations, being weak, the truth of love. The father was a prominent figure and the child's mother was related tot drugs. Refusing to be open about what happened, keeping up the appearances, the shame, the small judgmental society, drugs and money status, love and believing in a world of truth were the ingredients to draw the relations in between the families and their hate against each other.
Julia's family was a drugs family. Her mother as head of the family, her father died. The sister of her mother died , and had her illegitimate child raised by Julia's mother. The child, Tybaldo was a young successful business man who she wanted to use for her drugs deals. She really cared about him and finding herself in a business she thought was as okay as any other business because she provided an income for a lot of people. This was also the reason , in her eyes, why Julia and Tybaldo could have a great life and have everything they wanted. Julia objected to her mothers business, longing for a place where she could just be herself, without dealing with 'the wrong money, without the longing of a money status. She was very fond of her nephew Tybaldo, and he of her.
Romeo was a poet, a dreamer. His father was a weak person, avoiding any conflict, his mother therefor bitter. She hated the idea that Tybaldo was successful, the illegitimate child of her husband. As Tybaldo was the half brother of Romeo and the nephew of Julia it was impossible for these families to accept the love of Romeo and Julia. The hiding of the truth and therefor the truth of real love, resulted finally in the death of Romeo and Tybaldo, leaving behind a father who till the end hided for the consequences of his deeds, not capable to understand that how he handled his own situation, avoiding the truth of his life, caused the death of both his sons and left Julia and all family and friends with this intense sorrow.
The narrator and voice over to tell what the story was about came from the role of the vicar. The voice of the truth came from Julia. The voice of finding real love came from Romeo. The disappointment and struggle from Tybaldo, the bitterness of the mother of Romeo . and the illusions of a good life from the mother of Julia and the father of Romeo.
